Sustainable Rural Development in South Asia: A Critical Review of Challenges and Interventions
Keywords:
Sustainable rural development, South Asia, climate resilience, gender inclusion, governanceAbstract
Sustainable rural development has become a critical policy and research priority across South Asia, where agrarian distress, environmental degradation, social inequality, and weak institutional governance continue to constrain inclusive growth. Despite substantial progress in sustainability studies, an integrated understanding of these challenges remains limited. This study therefore conducts a systematic literature review (SLR), following the PRISMA 2020 framework, to synthesize findings from peer-reviewed articles (n=78) retrieved exclusively from the Scopus database. The review aims to analyze the bibliometric patterns and thematic evolution of sustainable rural development research in South Asia, identify the major challenges confronting sustainability outcomes, and evaluate strategic interventions implemented to address them. Bibliometric analysis reveals a consistent rise in scholarly output over the past five years, with India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh emerging as the leading contributors, and an evolving research focus from agricultural productivity toward themes of climate resilience, gender inclusion, and institutional governance. Thematic analysis identifies four dominant clusters: sustainable agrarian practices, climate resilience and environmental governance, gender equity and social inclusion, and local institutional integration within global sustainability frameworks. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that achieving sustainable rural development in South Asia requires harmonizing agricultural innovation, environmental adaptation, gender empowerment, and decentralized governance under coherent policy structures aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study concludes by emphasizing the need for future research to adopt cross-country, longitudinal, and policy-integrated approaches to advance equitable and context-sensitive sustainability transitions in the region.
